Abstract
The use of tagging using different techniques has been recognized as a valuable means to study different population aspects of marine fish species. In the National Institute of Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) of Argentina an activity was designed for the use of mark-recapture techniques by conventional tag brands in a demersal-benthic shark "narrownose smooth-hound" (Mustelus schmitti), to establish displacements in the Argentine Uruguayan coastal ecosystem. The use of conventional tag brands was established primarily as a cheap method, used in sharks worldwide, although dependent on the activity of the commercial fleet. Between November 2010 and December 2011, 2,471 individuals over 50 cm in total length were tagged, with type DART tags. Until December 2012, it was possible to recover 42 tags (1.70%). This paper aims to describe, discuss and analyze some problems currently associated with tagging and conventional tag recovery in Argentina, a country with virtually no experience in this technique in marine fish, using the application on this shark.
